This year has been nothing short of unprecedented and we now find ourselves in the holiday season. The state of the world is not how we’ve normally witnessed around this time so it’s important that we continue to adjust accordingly.
This year our plans might look a little different, in fact they should. The holidays should not be used as an excuse to disregard the fact that we are still in a pandemic.
The holiday season is symbolic for family gatherings, good food, gifts, laughs and love. Aside from the typical festivities, there are some things to discuss. Here are six wellness tips for this holiday season.
Tip #1: Continue to social distance. This is self explanatory but nevertheless it’s always good to reiterate.
Tip #2: Wear a mask PROPERLY! We have all seen the various ineffective ways that people have been wearing their masks. Put it on right please.
Tip #3: Don’t let anyone guilt trip you into going somewhere, doing something or consuming anything that you really don’t want to.
We are still in a pandemic so you do not have to take time to come up with a good excuse or a way not to hurt someone’s feelings. If you don’t want to go somewhere because you’d rather social distance, say no. If there is a possibility that you will see someone that you don’t want to be around, then don’t go. If your family has a tradition to go Black Friday shopping and you are feeling a bit anxious about the circumstances, then stay put.
Something that you should not be guilt tripped into doing is spending unnecessary money. If you don’t have it, don’t spend it. If you know you are trying to save or if you have bills and debt that you need to pay off you need to find the strength to not give in to making unplanned purchases. There will always be another deal, sale and Black Friday. Stick to your budget.
If you are someone who has certain eating habits things might be a bit difficult around this time of year. In order to not be tempted it might be a good idea to try and remember your why. It’s easy to find yourself in the midst of a good time and wanting to enjoy everything that everyone else is. Make your plate your own and if you need to, eat before you go.
Holiday gatherings usually means there will be some kind of alcoholic beverage involved. Just because it’s there and offered to you that doesn’t mean that you have to drink it. Make your own decisions, and if you are going to drink be mindful of your alcohol intake and make sure you are drinking plenty of water.
Tip #4: Be aware of your mood and feelings during this season.
This is the time of year when people can become overwhelmed with emotions, particularly sadness. You may be familiar with the term ‘holiday blues’. The reasons can range from loss of loved ones, some form of trauma, complicated family dynamics, loneliness, etc.
If you or anyone you know feels down during the holidays then make sure you are seeking any needed help. Don’t feel guilty for reaching out to people in moments of need. You have people in your life that love and care about you; even when you don’t think you do. Take time to really sit with yourself and let everything out in a constructive way. Look into setting up an appointment with a therapist if you feel it is necessary. There’s always someone willing to support you.

Tip #5: Shop for seasonal produce.
Ever wonder why you really only see pumpkins and other fruits and vegetables during certain times within the year? Well that’s because that’s when they’re in season, meaning they do not grow all year long. The benefits of eating fresh produce when it’s in season is that the taste will be at its best compared to when it’s not and the prices could be more affordable due to the large supply.
Tip #6: Get a full length of rest everyday.
Getting enough sleep is not just good for your energy level, it is also essential to maintaining your immune system. If you don’t get a full 7-8 hours of sleep you will become immunocompromised. This depletion of your immune system then leads to a greater chance of becoming sick.
We all need to be making sure that we take good care of ourselves, now more than ever. Yes, the holidays are to be enjoyed but we must stay well.
